at ryerson, a large part of our curriculum in third year is based on the social determinants of health which does focus on homelessness and poverty. my community placement is at the toronto friendship centre which allows me to see the determinants up close and personal. i think it’s crucial that nursing schools focus a large portion of their curriculum on community health to help reorient health services and fight for public policy changes to ensure a better future for our city and country.

Thanks Michelle glad that you like the book! Really if want to know how to do it there is nothing like practical experience, and I really encourage you to find people that are doing the work and speak to them. Cathy is a high profile street nurse and was very willing to spend time with me when I sent her a kind email explaining what I wanted to do. If you know any organizations that is doing work you like, better yet any specific people email them with a few kind words and a brief explain of what you might like to talk to them about. They could tell you how to get involved with them or in similar work. If you don't happen to know anyone you could ask a professor if they know anyone you could talk to about the subject. Hope that helps! Really it comes down to just starting to do what you think is right, I did with Nursing Ideas and I've been learning and getting better, even if it is slowly.

Hi Rob, I am a LPN student in Alberta. Our community nursing text book is very theoretical- and I really liked your interview with Cathy Crowe, she put a face onto all this information. It seems far away at this stage of the schooling but I wonder how do you take what you know about the needs of the community and move forward with it? Where do you go to find funds for some of these issues?(as a street nurse like Cathy for basic necessities ) I have not yet done my community rotation but I like the suggestion to volunteer. Hey Rob, great job on the interview! To respond to the q’s, I would say that I received adequate info about homelessness and poverty when I completed my community rotation. A passionate and knowledgeable prof certainly helped me become more engaged in the current social issues. To address the other q, I did place a request for my community placement. I wanted to be at a community sexual health clinic to see an example of how this particular organization was able to mobilize a community to engage in healthier practices.
