"It can be distressing to read through an open forum and see angry rantings, disillusionment, colleague-bashing, or even confidential patient information being shared online." [1] p. 24
One of the regular problems, issues, concerns, barriers or any other term you could think to call the object to the use of online tools that is raised is the negative perceptions that can be carried forward. The only problem that I have with this focus is that technology is not the problem.
The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency. - Bill Gates
The problems that online forms bring to the surface are not a problem of technology, the technology is only magnifying problems. I remember very clearly when I arrived in nursing school the positive and the optimistic opinions I was given. They were exciting and inspiring. However, there were also opinions and then eventually experiences that were pessimistic, "get out of the profession before it is to late" is just one of many things I sadly was exposed to. I guarantee you the Dean of my nursing school would not be to pleased with this, and due to the fact that it was not recorded she would never see it, but it is happening.
When we come across the negative problems that are exposed due to the use of technology the blame shouldn't be placed solely on the technology. The problem of "wasting time" or unprofessional comments is not a result of having access to Facebook it is much deeper than that. These are issues of professionalism, hostile work environments and poisonous cultures. Problems that need to be addressed, and blocking Facebook is not doing it.
Being so new and still green in the ears, I don't pretend to have all the answers. Ideas a plenty, but ideas are 1% of the problem 99% is the execution. One of the ideas I keep coming back to is the focus on the wrong things, the problems and over analyzing them. When learning to ride a bike you are taught to look where you want to go, not at the sign you are trying to avoid. Hearing about horizontal violence ad nauseam in my undergraduate did help me to recognize it when I saw it. However, thinking that every workplace might be a toxic one did not give me much, if any, use advice for creating a high performance work environment. How do we get there? What is involved in the magical components that create a innovative environment? How do we get there? I think there needs to be more focus on this. I want to get to the solutions, not just the ability to identify problems.
